One of the biggest differences between hiking boots and backpacking boots is that backpacking boots are stiffer and have more support than hiking boots. This is because backpacking boots need to carry the weight of the person wearing them as well as the weight of the pack that the person is carrying. Hiking boots don’t need to give the extra support because there is not a heavy pack in addition to the person. Backpacking boots are not necessarily needed unless the trail is a rugged trail. If the trail is pretty smooth and straight forward, then hiking boots will work.
